The latest themes of the International Day of Peace
The ambassador of peace, Prem Rawat, says that it is possible to establish peace in the world, provided that each individual has peace of mind within. He is the founder of the "The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF)", which endeavors to establish peace in the world. On the International Day of Peace 2019, his talk focused on the responsibility of each individual in keeping peace or in sparking conflicts.
The International Day of Peace is observed each year on the 21st of September. The day was first observed in 1981 after the universal resolution by the United Nations. The General Assembly then set common objectives for the day. It mainly consists of making every human committed to peacekeeping efforts, regardless of where they live and who they are. The goal is to nurture the culture of peace in everyone in the world.
Taking actions to combat climate change to build peace
In 2019, the theme of International Day of Peace highlights the relationship between peacekeeping initiatives and the environment. The world we live in has deteriorated a lot due to several factors. The earth temperature has raised, causing drastic changes in the world climate. In different parts of the world, unprecedented weather conditions have been recorded over the past decade. 2019 was the second-warmest climate after the year 2016.
As a result, the urgent need to reduce climate change has become the best way to prevent conflicts and promote peace in the world. Severe droughts, cases of massive flooding, tragic earthquakes have all caused a multitude of human losses throughout the world. In fact, the UN classifies climate change as a dangerous threat to international peace and security.
Everyone has the right to peace
It is shocking that in the 2018, some people are still deprived of their rights. Traditions and culture remove women of their right to choose their spouse. On the other hand, women in some countries are still left without the right to education and work. Thus, they are forced or sold into marriage. Likewise, in some countries, children are underprivileged and robbed of their rights to play and study.
They must serve in the army, or are forced into marriage in exchange to dowries. There are many sad facts relating the plights of humans whose rights have been violated, which emphasize the need to give a call to human rights. It was also the year when the United Nations commemorated 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Building peace together
In 2017, the celebration of the International Day of Peace focused on the necessity to join the initiative to build peace together. Crime rate has been escalating throughout the world despite the enforcement made in the rules of law and order. People do not respect each other, and that is why the theme focused on respect, safety and dignity for all humanity.
Some people are forced to leave their homes and country to seek a refuge in a foreign country. However, they are deprived of most of their rights once they arrive there. In other words, discrimination based on origin and race is still prominent; intolerance increases xenophobia and prejudice.
